A centrally important document in the life of any Heathen is the Hávamál, or "Words of the high One" Depending on your point of view, the Hávamál is either advice directly given to us from Odhinn, the AllFather, or it is advice written down over the years which has been attributed to him. In either case, the wisdom of the Hávamál is timeless and time-honored. While it may have to be viewed through a modern understanding, the advice still serves us well today, and will continue to do so for many years to come! The original translation of the poem comes to us from Iceland, in Old Norse. It has been translated into many languages, and there are many different versions to choose from. For those who wish to discuss the various translations, there is the Havamal_Studies list on Yahoo groups (which happens to be run by our Lawspeaker/Gothi, Matt). |
